Raising Safe Digital Citizens (Round Up)

Thanks for joining our parenting webinar on internet safety!

EVENT ROUND UP

Thanks for coming to our webinar!

We hope that our interactive presentation underlined the fact that we're all in this together when it comes to keeping our children safe online. As parents, our concerns and goals are mutual—we all strive to equip our children with the right tools and understanding to navigate the digital world with confidence and security.

Let's take a look at some key insights from our polls during the event:

68% of children are primarily occupied with games and YouTube.

Our webinar participants indicated that 35% are engaged with games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Mobile Legends, while 33% use YouTube to watch game content and cartoons.

52% of our children have 1-3 hours of screen time per day.

This insight underlines the crucial role of digital mediums in our children's lives and reinforces the importance of internet safety.

The top three concerns parents have are…

  1. Cyberbullying & Abuse (35%)

  2. Phishing & Scams (20%)

  3. Online Relationships (18%)

Q&A Segment

Q: “Where can I find out more about the settings of the apps my kids are on?”
A: You can find information for popular apps on our website here: https://www.cyberlitebooks.com/cybersafetykids. We also recommend searching for official guides published by the specific apps/companies to keep yourself up to date. For example, search for “TikTok parental controls” and you’ll find TikTok’s official page on user safety.

Q: “There's often guidance that we have a limit to screen times. Does this apply for non-passive activities like homework, studies, usage of creative apps? How do you decide if it is too much? I struggle with this.”
A: This is a great question - a lot of parents struggle with screen time management, especially since the pandemic started. Screen time should be categorised in two - passive (i.e. watching videos, doomscrolling on social media) and active (i.e. research, creative projects, and even gaming). Passive time should be controlled and limited, as it can get the child into a trance-like state. Active screen time is engaging, and can be negotiated with the child if they are productive or learning new skills.

Q: “In Roblox, can we rely on the in-app reviews to allow our children to download them?”
A: Age recommendations and reviews are great as a guide, but they should not be relied on completely, as other people’s views may differ to your family’s values. What we recommend instead is something of a mantra at the Cyberlite office: a family that scrolls together, stays together. Always sit and play with your child when embarking on a new game to ensure that the experience is safe for them!
